My Personal Journey into Pelvic Physio...and how a Mentor could have changed that...

Hi! My name is Rebecca Liberatore and I am the co- director of PPPM. Today I wanted to share my personal journey into Pelvic Floor Physio and the motivation we had for setting up this service.

Early in my Physio career, I was running a Clinical Pilates service within a Musc/ Sports Physio Private Practice. Unsurprisingly, I had lots of patients concurrently reporting pelvic floor issues. Despite my desire to help these patients, I had not completed any training in this area so I would refer these patients off to an experienced Pelvic Health Physio.

I spoke to my bosses about my passion for working in this area and need to do further study. Being astute business owners they realised it was a win win situation for them...they would support me to do further study in the area, if I would set up a Pregnancy and Pelvic Health service on my return.

The course was amazing... jam packed... I returned to the clinic motivated and raring to go. However, after each patient I started to realise I had so many questions with no one to support me. Not only did I have clinical questions but business related question about building this specialised service. I become deflated and unmotivated. Maybe this area wasn’t for me? If only I could get some support. Unfortunately, I had to make the decision to go and work elsewhere (which I was lucky enough to be able to do) if I was to continue to work in this area and be the skilled clinician I strived to be.

Unsurprisingly when we were developing PPPM we had my former self in mind. I think the most valuable things would have been practical resources that I could have used straight away, a mentor I could meet fortnightly to discuss different cases and someone on call to ask questions as they arose. PPPM is that and more!

So if the story of my former self rings true to you or your staff member,  I urge you to look into a mentoring program. I certainly wish I had this available to me (and I am sure my bosses do to).
